Facing the Pirogue plant, 5 km from Grand Bourg, the Mare au Punch hides a short story.

It is said that during the night of 24 to 25 June 1849 former slaves, very angry after multiple attempts at fraud, by their former masters in the legislative elections, attacked the Pirogue property.

They mixed all the stocks of sugar and rum from the Pirogue plant to make a giant punch and invited all the residents in the area to drink with them.

The story would have been rather nice if the former slaves, dead drunk after three days of festivities, had not attacked priests and the religious. Today, this story is still recounted in a song of Creole folklore.
