In 1493, during his second voyage, Christopher Columbus discovered the Virgin Islands. Abandoned by the Spanish, the archipelago became the ideal haven for pirates.
In 1917, Denmark,possessor of the Virgin Islands, sold them to the United States and the United Kingdom for 25 million dollars.
