Fort Louis is a French military fort built in the 18th century on the heights of Marigot to defend the French part of the island of Saint-Martin from enemy attack.
Fort Louis was built in 1789 at the instigation of Chevalier de Durat, Governor of Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy. It was originally built to defend the warehouses in the port of Marigot, where the products harvested by the inhabitants (coffee, salt, rum, sugar cane) were stored.
During the 19th century, the fort was restored, but sometimes fell into the hands of the English, who came from the island of Anguilla to pillage the warehouses.
In 1993, restoration and enhancement work was undertaken by the Hope Estate archaeological association of Saint-Martin, in close collaboration with Guadeloupe's Service Militaire Adapté (SMA) units.

On the other side of Anse Marcel, in the north of the island, Petites Cayes is a superb deserted beach frequented by nature lovers and surfers alike, who call it Wilderness.
This wild paradise is well-deserved and can only be discovered on foot, via the sentier des Froussards, which offers the island's last intact coastal forest. Bring sneakers and a bottle of water for this 30-minute hike from either Anse Marcel or Cul-de-Sac (more than 2 hours if you wish to hike the whole trail).
The site is located within the Nature Reserve, so it is forbidden to take samples of the flora and fauna. The famous red-headed cactus can be admired along the way. On the part of the trail coming from Cul-de-Sac, before reaching Petites Cayes, there is a beach of sea-polished coral.
